Cha Hak Yeon, better known as N from K-pop group VIXX, is about to steal the show as a quirky content creator in MBC’s upcoming fantasy-comedy Oh My Ghost Clients, premiering May 30, 2025. Playing Go Kyun Woo, a view-chasing video star who teams up with a ghost-seeing labor attorney, Cha’s diving into his flashiest role yet. In a recent Soompi interview, he dished on how he prepped for the part, tackled the tricky art of comedy, and leaned on co-stars Jung Kyung Ho and Seol In Ah to bring the “Moojins” trio to life. Here’s the lowdown on Cha’s prep, his take on Kyun Woo’s charm, and why this role’s got fans buzzing.

Crafting Kyun Woo’s Quirky Charm

In Oh My Ghost Clients, Cha plays Go Kyun Woo, a former journalist turned content creator who runs Kyunjjang TV, a channel obsessed with racking up likes. Kyun Woo’s a bundle of contradictions: he’s a bit of a goofy attention hog, but he’s sharp enough to solve crises and soft enough to be moved by the ghosts’ tragic stories. Cha told,

“At times, he seems like a lighthearted airhead, but he’s quick to judge situations and even plays a key role in finding solutions during crises. I was drawn to the character because of his unique charm—he feels like a refreshing and addictive ‘sparkling drink’ that clears away blockages.”

What hooked Cha was Kyun Woo’s ability to lighten the mood. The drama tackles heavy labor issues—like workplace deaths and unfair contracts—through a fantasy lens, and Kyun Woo’s humor is the secret sauce. “Since the drama deals with heavy topics, there are a lot of serious moments, but Kyun Woo’s presence adds a touch of humor, which I really liked,” Cha said. Fans are already hyped, with X posts calling him “perfect for this chaotic energy” after seeing teasers of Kyun Woo in flashy outfits, hyping up live streams, and infiltrating labor sites in work gear.

Going All-In on Prep: Fake Live Streams and Comedy Struggles

Getting into Kyun Woo’s head was no cakewalk. Cha, who’s flexed his acting chops in dramas like Joseon Attorney and Castaway Diva, called the role a “real challenge,” especially since it’s his first big comedic part. “While portraying Kyun Woo, I kept thinking about how to portray this comic and cheerful character without making him seem shallow,” he told MyDramaList. “Through this, I began to understand, even if just a little, what senior actors mean when they say that doing comedy is difficult.”

To nail Kyun Woo’s attention-seeking vibe, Cha got creative. He practiced by pretending to be a live-streamer at home, chatting to an imaginary audience. “I sat alone in front of my computer at home and pretended that many viewers were waiting for me, then did live broadcasts,” he shared. It’s easy to picture Cha hyping up his laptop like it’s a packed chatroom, and that dedication shows in stills where he’s beaming with a camera, pitching wild ideas to boost Kyunjjang TV’s views. The production team raved about his transformation, saying, “Cha Hak Yeon impressively transforms into a completely different person as soon as the camera is turned on,” per MyDramaList.

Leaning on the “Moojins” Squad

Cha didn’t go it alone—his co-stars Jung Kyung Ho and Seol In Ah were his secret weapons. The trio plays the “Moojins,” a ragtag team helping ghosts resolve labor disputes. Jung Kyung Ho stars as Noh Moo Jin, a broke attorney who sees spirits after a near-death mishap, while Seol In Ah plays Na Hee Joo, the fiery brains of the operation. Cha gushed about their chemistry, saying Jung Kyung Ho “led the team well” and kept the set buzzing with chatter. “Thanks to the constant conversations I had with Jung Kyung Ho and Seol In Ah, we were able to create fun scenes together. I’m truly grateful for that,” he told.

The vibe was tight from the start. Cha said the cast bonded before filming, which made their scenes—like raiding a factory or chanting “Make it happen—even if it can’t!” in teasers—crackle with energy. “What drew me to the project, aside from the fun script, was the anticipation that I could create something truly enjoyable with the ‘Moojins’ members,” he added. Seol In Ah echoed the love, telling Soompi she “couldn’t imagine” the set without them, while Jung Kyung Ho called Cha and Seol his “close younger siblings” on MyDramaList. Fans on Reddit are eating it up, with one post saying, “The Moojins’ chemistry looks so natural—Cha’s gonna shine with these two.”

Why This Role’s a Big Deal

Cha’s no rookie—his acting career kicked off with Hotel King in 2014, and he’s juggled VIXX’s music gigs with roles in Familiar Wife and Bad and Crazy. But Oh My Ghost Clients feels like a breakout. Directed by Yim Soon Rye (Little Forest) and written by Kim Bo Tong (D.P.), the 10-episode series mixes slapstick chaos with heartfelt worker stories, and Cha’s Kyun Woo is the glue for its wild tone. Stills show him in everything from snazzy vlogger fits to gritty labor-site gear, hinting at a role that’s equal parts silly and soulful.

The show’s mix of comedy, action, and social commentary—plus a stacked cast with Tang Jun Sang and Kyung Soo Jin—has Reddit’s r/KDRAMA hyping it as a must-watch, comparing it to quirky hits like CBS’s Ghosts. With a May 30 premiere at 9:50 p.m. KST (global OTT details TBD), Cha’s got a shot to cement his actor cred.
