Horror fans, it’s time to clutch your rosaries—the first trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites is here, and it’s scary as hell! Hitting theaters September 5, 2025, this ninth and final Conjuring Universe movie is our last ride with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the ghost-busting Ed and Lorraine Warren. Directed by Michael Chaves, the trailer’s got heart-stopping scares and serious emotional vibes, making us both hyped and kinda sad to say goodbye. Here’s why this trailer’s got us all freaked out in the best way!

One Last Terrifying Case

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema dropped the trailer with the spooky tagline, “Discover why this case was their last.” Set in 1986, Last Rites dives into the real-life Smurl family haunting in Pennsylvania, where a family got terrorized by demons for over a decade. The trailer shows Ed and Lorraine, now retired, getting pulled back for one final showdown. Ed’s like, “Every case is different. Every family is different. Once we start, there’s no going back,” and you can feel the weight of it. Lorraine’s “Something’s different” gives us goosebumps, and then—boom—a demon growls, “We’ve been waiting so patiently for you,” and lunges at her. We’re not okay!

It’s got all the Conjuring stuff we love: dark hallways, creepy lights flickering, and things going bump in the night. But it’s not just about scaring you silly—the trailer sneaks in sweet moments between Ed and Lorraine that remind us why we’re so attached to them. This is their big farewell, and it’s hitting us right in the feels.

The Cast and Crew Nailing It

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are back as Ed and Lorraine, and they’re bringing their A-game for this last hurrah. Their chemistry’s always been what makes these movies special, and the trailer proves they’re going out strong. We’ve also got Mia Tomlinson (The Beast Must Die) and Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody) playing Judy Warren, the Warrens’ daughter, and her boyfriend, Tony Spera. Plus, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Covenant, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, and Steve Coulter as Father Gordon round out the crew.

Michael Chaves, who directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II, is running the show, mixing killer scares with the Warrens’ emotional story. He’s said they went for a “personal story” instead of a huge demon brawl to keep it all about Ed and Lorraine. The script’s by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with some tweaks by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, based on a story co-written by James Wan, who’s producing with Peter Safran.

The End of the Warrens, But Not the Scares

Last Rites wraps up the main Conjuring series, closing “Phase One” of the franchise, which has given us eight films since 2013, like Annabelle and The Nun. New Line’s Richard Brener told The Hollywood Reporter that early cuts are “testing through the roof,” and they’re already dreaming up a “Phase Two” with new Conjuring Universe stories. Fans on X are losing their minds, calling the trailer “straight-up terrifying” and gushing over Wilson and Farmiga’s “perfect” vibe.

Why This Trailer’s So Good

The Conjuring movies have always been about scares and heart, and this trailer’s got both in spades. It’s not just creepy demons—it’s Ed and Lorraine’s love, their faith, and how much their work costs them. The Smurl case, with its crazy history, feels like the perfect way to go big for their final fight. And those first-look images going around, showing the Warrens kicking butt and flashbacks to their younger selves (played by Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor), are giving us all the nostalgic vibes.

Filming wrapped in London on November 22, 2024, after a super-quick one-month shoot, so Last Rites is ready to roll for its September 5 release in theaters and IMAX. The trailer’s loaded with eerie dolls, demonic snarls, and the Warrens’ rock-solid bond, promising a finale that’ll spook us and maybe make us tear up.

Time to Get Spooked

The trailer’s out now, so check it out on YouTube or the Conjuring socials if you dare. With Last Rites just months away, we’re counting down to what looks like a scary, heartfelt goodbye to Ed and Lorraine. So, grab your holy water, say a quick prayer, and get ready for one last wild ride with the Warrens. Who else is already screaming?
